Showing Some Love to Our Locals This Bookshop Day!
Yesterday was Bookshop Day, and some of our team members took to the streets, visiting their favourite independent bookshops to give thanks for all of their hard work in bringing magical stories to life. We spent time browsing shelves, chatting with booksellers and soaking in that special atmosphere only an indie bookshop can provide.
It was the perfect reminder of why these little havens are so important — and how much they need our support! In an age of online shopping and instant downloads, independent bookshops are more than just retail spaces; they’re hubs of creativity, discovery and community.
Ever noticed how browsing an indie bookshop feels a bit like embarking on an adventure? That’s because these shops carefully curate their shelves with handpicked gems you won’t find everywhere else. The booksellers know their readers — they’re the ones suggesting that perfect title you didn’t even know you needed. Every indie store has its own personality and its own quirks, making the shopping experience feel personal and unique.
They’re also often the biggest supporters of local authors, including those who may not have the platform to reach a wider audience. They host book launches, signings and readings that create a direct connection between authors and readers. If you want to discover fresh voices and hidden talent, your local indie shop is the place to be!
More than just places to buy books, indie bookshops are community hotspots. They run children’s story times, author events and workshops, fostering a love for reading and creativity in the heart of your local area. Whether you’re chatting with fellow readers or attending an event, these shops help create a sense of belonging.
Due to all of this, shopping local is a no-brainer, right? When timing and location allows it, why not head over to your nearest independent bookshop, rather than shopping online? Even if you’re looking for a specific title, most indie stores can order in books quickly. By buying from them, you’re keeping money in your local economy and supporting a small business. Plus, you get to enjoy the experience of browsing those beautiful bookshelves!
Attending events like book signings, story times or workshops at your local shop is another great way to help indies. These events are often free and are a great way to support the bookshop, meet new people and even discover new favourite authors. They’re also super fun for kids and adults alike!
Lastly, if there’s an upcoming release you’re excited about, consider pre-ordering it through an independent bookshop. Pre-orders help them gauge interest in titles and ensure they stock books that will resonate with their customers. Buying direct from their websites (many have online stores too!) is another great way to ensure more of the purchase price goes straight to them.
It’s no exaggeration to say that independent bookshops are the heart and soul of the literary world, providing us with magical spaces filled with stories waiting to be discovered. They truly do create connections between readers and authors, but they need our help to continue being the vibrant spaces that so many know and love.
So, whether you’re a parent on the lookout for a new children’s book, a student seeking study material or just someone in search of a good story, head over to your local indie bookshop and show them some love. Let’s keep these magical places thriving for generations to come!
