Ola Snimshchikova Illustrator Blog Post – ‘But Dancing is For Girls!’

Ola Snimshchikova is the fabulous illustrator behind CBeebies presenter, Gyasi Sheppy’s debut children’s picture book, ‘But Dancing is For Girls!’.

To celebrate the release of ‘But Dancing is For Girls!’ publishing on 25/09/25, Ola was gracious enough to join us as a guest writer on our blog! So scroll down to learn what Ola’s favourite thing about being an illustrator is, what her favourite children’s book was growing up, and what inspired her to become an illustrator!

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

I’ve always loved getting lost in stories and imaging my own, especially when I was little. While studying New Media Arts in Poland, I realised that drawing was the way I connected with stories the most, it just felt natural. That’s when it really hit me that I wanted to become a children’s book illustrator. After finishing my studies at 21, I moved back to Ukraine and started working on my dream.

What’s your favourite thing about being an illustrator?

One of my favourite things about being an illustrator is the chance to share how I see the world through my art. I love creating characters, moods, and little moments that feel real and relatable. It means a lot when someone connects with something I created, especially kids. It feels like a quiet way of telling a story, and it’s really special to be part of that.

What was your favourite children’s book growing up?

Growing up, my favourite children’s books were Harry Potter and Pippi Longstocking. I was enchanted by the magic and adventure in Harry Potter, while Pipi Longstocking inspired me with her fearless, playful spirit. Both stories filled me with imagination and wonder, and they helped shape my dream of creating magical worlds of my own.

What is your favourite aspect/part about the cover for ‘But Dancing is For Girls!’ ?

My favourite part of the cover for ‘But Dancing is For Girls!’ is how full of energy and joy it feels. The bright colours and lively movement really capture the spirit of the story. I love how the characters’ expressions invite readers in, making you want to open the book and join the fun right away.

What was the best part about the illustration process of ‘But Dancing is For Girls!’ ?

Working on this story has been an amazing journey, and I’m so excited about this project! I love using bright colours and showing movement in my art, so this book has been a great chance to do what I enjoy most.

It was also a real pleasure to work with Gyasi, the author of the story! His support meant the world to me, and I truly wanted to do my best to bring his story to life in the most thoughtful and meaningful way I could. As an illustrator, I think it’s really important to remember that you’re brining someone else’s story to life. The artwork needs to reflect their ideas and vision, but it’s also okay to add a little bit of your own style. It’s all about finding a balance and working together to create something special.

If you could invite one children’s book character to tea, who would it be and why?

Both little and adult me would love to invite Pippi Longstocking to tea! She’s full of fun, adventure, and surprising ideas. I think her fearless and joyful spirit would make for the most lively and unforgettable conversation. Plus, I’m sure she’d bring a bit of magic and mischief to the tea table!
