PRESS RELEASE 4th MARCH 2021

Leicester’s Sweet Cherry Publishing donates over 400 brand new children’s books for World Book Day

World Book Day 2021 logoLeicester-based independent children’s publisher Sweet Cherry Publishing has donated over 400 children’s books this World Book Day, alongside virtual authors visits to schools across the UK.

World Book Day charity reports that 1 in 11 children have never owned a book of their own. In a shocking close-to-home report, Save the Children announced that over 25,000 children in Leicester live in poverty, with the city being amongst the top 20% most deprived areas in the UK.

Inspired by their Leicester-roots, Sweet Cherry has donated over 400 brand new children’s books to schools, charities and organisations across the UK, including a Children in Need partner, Read for Good

On behalf of Read for Good, Cherry Land said: “Sweet Cherry has generously donated hundreds of beautiful books to support our work in schools and hospitals across the UK encouraging children to read for pleasure. It’s wonderful to be able to provide such well-crafted books to children who need them the most, particularly at this challenging time. Our partnership, since 2019, has added enormous value to our charity’s impact, inspiring a life-long love of reading not only on World Book Day but all year round.”

Sweet Cherry’s authors in Leicestershire, Essex, Buckinghamshire and Scotland have also hosted virtual school visits via Zoom to talk about their writing, read extracts of their books and answer questions, all in an effort to encourage children to read more pleasure.

Divia Kainth, Marketing and Publicity Executive at Sweet Cherry Publishing, said:
“World Book Day is the time that publishers, booksellers, authors and book lovers all come together to not only celebrate reading but to encourage others to read more, too. The proven benefits of reading for pleasure are endless, but it’s also a great way to discover a whole new world while we’re still stuck in lockdown.”

Sweet Cherry publishes children’s books that make reading accessible to all kinds of readers, from fun fiction stories with engaging illustrations to adapted easy-to-read editions of classic literature to providing free companion audiobooks.
