[PRESS RELEASE – 4TH OCTOBER 2022]

Sweet Cherry Publishing hosts showcase for 400+ local school children

Sweet Cherry Publishing, Leicester’s multi-award-winning children’s book publisher, is hosting an author showcase at The Y Theatre on 11th October 2022. The aim of the event is to inspire children to read more for pleasure and discover the joy of storytelling.

The line-up includes Leicestershire-based authors, Gemma Barder, who has adapted over twenty-five classics for young readers, and Harry Meredith, author of ten football biographies for young football fans. USA-based musical theatre actress and yoga teacher, Lauren Hoffmeier, will deliver a virtual session to introduce children to mindfulness and yoga through her New York Times-featured picture book series, Mula and the Fly, before Manchester author M. J. Sullivan will entice gamers and sci-fi lovers with his new Game Over series. Also on the guestlist are BAFTA-winning composer Ellie Wyatt and K-POP hit writer Becky Jerams, authors of The Songs You’ve Never Heard, who will be reading from their novel and performing pop songs from its accompanying music album.

The keynote speaker will be Abdul Thadha (pictured right), Managing Director of both Sweet Cherry Publishing and Books2Door, one of the UK’s biggest online bookshops. Abdul will share his own personal story as a child growing up in the Highfields area of Leicester and starting two multi-million-pound book businesses shortly after graduating from De Montfort University.

With support from contributors Learning Resources and Books2Door, toys will be given out on the day and each child will also receive a free book in a goody bag containing reading activities and book vouchers. For 1 in 3 children, it’s likely to be the first book they own and with the cost of living crisis worsening and over 25,000 children in Leicester already living in poverty, this showcase event forms a big part of Sweet Cherry’s mission to make books accessible and affordable for all.

There will be over 400 local pupils and teachers in attendance, along with special guests from the children’s media industry. Sweet Cherry extends an open invitation to local university students, booksellers and journalists to come and meet the publishing team that brings books to life and learn more about publishing opportunities in the Midlands.
