PRESS RELEASE – 19 MARCH 2021

“A rising star in children’s publishing”
Sweet Cherry shortlisted for 3 British Book Awards

Independent children’s book publisher, Sweet Cherry, has been shortlisted in three categories at The British Book Awards 2021: Small Press of the Year, Children’s Publisher of the Year and The British Book Award for Export Sales Below £10m.

The news follows the recent announcement that the Leicester-based company won the regional award for Midland’s Small Press of the Year.

Hosted by The Bookseller, the judging panel described Sweet Cherry as ‘a rising star in children’s publishing’ and praised the company’s efforts last year:
“[Sweet Cherry’s] export sales doubled in 2020, and UK and e-book revenue rose nearly as much. Through its combination of educational and entertainment content, Sweet Cherry has also been encouraging English-language learning and reading for pleasure around the world.”

Sweet Cherry hit record-breaking sales in 2020 despite being based in Leicester, one of the longest-suffering UK cities during the pandemic. Staff have been working home since March 2020 and the company has been able to maintain its publishing programme as planned.

Lara Clift, Publisher and Sales Director at Sweet Cherry, said: “We are over the moon to have won Midland’s Small Press of the Year. The team has worked so hard during the pandemic and we could not be any happier to have been shortlisted in three categories!”
