Sweet Cherry welcomes new Publisher to award-winning team

Leicester-based Sweet Cherry has appointed Sanjee de Silva to the role of Publisher. The news follows the recent announcement from existing Publisher and Sales Director, Lara Clift, who is leaving the company to pursue new opportunities. Effective immediately, Sanjee de Silva will report to Managing Director, Abdul Thadha, and work closely with Managing Editor, Cecilia Bennett, on Sweet Cherry’s growing list of children’s books.

With his background in retail management and experience in purchasing around Europe, Sanjee said: “I am passionate about people and look forward to championing new voices in publishing as well as introducing childhood classics to a new generation.”

Despite the pandemic, Sweet Cherry’s team has been growing at a phenomenal rate, with 13 new employees across its design, editorial, sales and operations in just over one year. Founder and Managing Director, Abdul Thadha, said: “It gives me great pride to build and diversify publishing in the Midlands. I am pleased to build our growing team, from recent graduates to industry professionals, with a range of skills and experiences. Each member of the team has something different to offer and that makes for a terrific workforce.”

Praised for being “well ahead of the game, with half of its management from BAME backgrounds”, Sweet Cherry was recently named Midland’s Small Press of the Year at The British Book Awards 2021. Sweet Cherry will mark its tenth year of publishing later this year in October 2021, and is set to make a celebratory announcement in the forthcoming weeks.
